When did HTML get so confusing

I remember a time when HTML was a piece of cake. My first web page was created with Netscape HTML editor, from there I went to Homesite and actually did my coding. Now...what's up with this blog editor? I'm almost ready to go by some webspace and just create a blog from scratch. I mean this blog editor looks easy enough I'm just not satisfied with the way it looks and the other templates aren't any better. Is there a way to make your own template? I guess I'm just going to have to play around with this blog editor until I get everything the way I want it. So if you are actually reading this blog, don't get upset if everything is out of whack! =)
